If you're like me, you like it a lot when someone appreciates your good taste and decorating flair.  Don't have any flair?  Well, though you may not know it, you DO have flair, though it just may need to be coaxed out of you. It doesn't matter what style you like. It doesn't matter what colors you like either.  Decorating flair is nothing more than the expressing of your own personality in a way that is attractive to you and to others.

I've been an interior decorator for many, many years.  I'm also an art consultant for many Southern California businesses. And I can say, without hesitation, that most people's decorating or redecorating problems lie not in WHAT they have chosen to PUT in their homes, but HOW they have arranged what they have.  So if you've not had anyone rave over your home and how you've decorated it, chances are you have some arrangement mistakes that are ruining all of the other very good choices you have made.

Can you spot the problems in these two pictures? They are the types of problems I see every where I go. It doesn't matter what social or economic status you have, arrangement mistakes show up everywhere, even in homes that utilized the services of interior designers, unfortunately.  Sometimes designers get carried away with the idea of going "outside the box" and they break the traditionally accepted "rules" for proper design.  But sometimes they are not very successful.

Designing "Outside the Box"

I'm all for creative, unusual design statements. But I'm even more interested in making a home comfortable, inviting and useable.  Sometimes "going outside the box" makes people unsure of their surroundings and afraid to really use and enjoy a room.

Design that is "outside the box" isn't for everyone. So if that's where you want to go, more power to you!  But to be successful, you really need to acquire a very strong understanding of the accepted design "rules" and concepts.  And it's not just a matter of knowing them, you need to understand "why" they work.  Only then will you be successful in "breaking the rules".  Even then, at best, it's kind of tricky.
