Alter Furniture Placement to Protect Wood Furniture
Ultraviolet rays will be harmful to your fine wood
furniture, so keep them away from strong florescent lighting or bright sunlight. This is another reason
why it's good to periodically rearrange your furniture. You don't want a particular side to get sunlight
all the time and deteriorate.
Be careful of extremes in humidity as this can cause the core wood to contract and then the veneer
might buckle. If there is excessive humidity, the wood will absorb the moisture and then it might swell causing
it to warp. So keep the humidity as moderate as possible where you have placed fine furniture.
Tips on How to Clean and Preserve Fine Wood Furniture
There are a lot of misconceptions or myths that continue
to circulate on how to care for wood furniture. And just try and find instructions when you buy that lovely
armoire, coffee table, sideboard or other piece. I don't know about you, but I tend to neglect mine,
or I inevitably do something wrong, and then I've ruined it for all time.
First of all, we all need to understand that wood is alive. What? Yes, it is a living organism. It has
pores just like we do. It reacts to climate and temperature changes by expanding or contracting. Therefore,
it is subject to reacting to humidity, pollution, sunlight and water.
Just as we use soap and water to cleanse our faces as a good and basic maintenance for every day, using a
wood soap on your furniture acts like a deep-pore cleanser. It takes away the pollution from beneath
and gets rid of the impurities that have collected.
And just like our skin, that needs moisturizer after we clean it, sood needs a moisturizer as well. It
comes as a commercial cream and makes the surface of the more flexible. It is then less apt to crack
or split because of changes in the weather.
Don't apply the wood cream directly to the wood. Put it on a damp cloth, then work it into the wood by
rubbing the wood in the direction of the grain. How often? Well, fine furniture needs to be cleansed
and polished four times per year with the changing seasons.
Polish is the final application. You could compare it to makeup. To create a healthy glow that is
vibrant, rub the wood with a soft, dry cloth along the grain. Look for a non-silicone cream and polishes
that have a sun screen built in. Always
read the labels before buying any furniture polish and follow the directions for best results.
