How to Faux Finish Furniture and Accessories
Before starting any project, test your technique and confirm your selected colors. If you're
planning to paint over a semi-gloss or hi-gloos basecoat, be sure to lightly sand the surface first so that the next coat will "grip"
the surface. Use a cloth to wipe away any dust first.
To Get the Antique, Weathered Look
The crackle finish is recommended on interior surfaces such as
trim, moldings, baseboards, cabinets, picture frames and furniture.
There are an endless variety of colors to choose from for the base and top paint colors. Here are some basic steps to a
beautiful, weathered finish.
Tools You Will Need
- 1/4" nap roller
- foam or nylon/polyester brush
- painter's tape
- gloves
- drop cloth
- paint tray
- interior paint (2 colors)
- crackle
Apply a base color. Pick from an interior flat paint, a flat enamel, an eggshell enamel or a satin enamel. Let the basecoat
dry for four hours.
With a brush or a roller, you then want to apply an even coat of Crackle over the surface. Be liberal. Then allow this to dry for
approximately one hour.
You'll now have to decide if you want thin cracks or larger, more weathered cracks. For thin cracks, apply a thin amount of
top color with a roller. If you want a more noticeable contrast, use a heavier amount of the top color and apply with a brush.
When applying the top color, work quickly using no more than a few strokes. Choose an interior flat paint. The finish will
begin to crack within minutes of applying the top coat. If you use too many strokes you will disturb the cracks and prevent them
from forming properly. Now allow this finish to dry approximately 24 hours.
To get the best results, work when the temperature is 75 degrees and less than 50% humidity.
When you are positive that the topcoast has cured for 24 hours or longer, apply a crystal clear water-based polyurethane for
added durability and protection.
