The Living Room: It's Basic Elements
Today's living room is not nearly as formal as
it was a century ago when it was a formal parlor used to entertain honored guests. Back then, one
did not elevate one's feet or sit on the floor in the living room. Today's criteria is for the
living room to double as a place to entertain guests formally, yet also a place for the family to
be comfortable and at home.
Common elements you'll find in the typical
living room, therefore, are: a sofa or two, or a sofa and a love seat, or a sofa coupled with
various combinations of occasional chairs, a coffee table, end tables, ottomans, benches, shelving,
carpeting, lighting, art and accessories. You might also find a desk or bookshelves. And if there
is no family room in the home, most certainly a TV or entertainment center.
If it's extra large, you might also find a
piano and an eating area, or game table or multiples of plants, maybe even an armoire.
The single biggest challenge there is in
decorating the typical living room, is how to arrange the multitude of furnishings that are generally
planned for the room. And not only that, but how to coordinate all of the furnishings and accessories
with the carpeting, the wall color and coverings, dados and crown moldings, lighting,
window treatments and so forth.
DECORATING TIP: Start with the sofa and get it placed perfectly - everything else will fall
into place after that. If you're not sure how to begin, then be sure to get you a copy of my
ebook Decor Secrets Revealed. It's worth every penny, I promise,
and it comes with some special bonuses that will really help you in this process.
